The vast majority of police officers I know would prefer that private citizens not be able to own handguns, at all.

The general consensus here is people can and should be allowed to own firearms, but military style weapons need to be banned completely, and ownership of a firearm needs to require annual refresher training, plus screenings to establish mental and emotional stability to retain ownership, preferably done by locally run, government sponsored “well regulated militias”
