Some friends of mine read a book about this phenomenon, and they’re currently experimenting with using smaller plates, which is supposed to help break you of this.

I’m not sure if smaller plates would work. It’s not really about portion size of the meal in itself but we have a fucked up perception of the make up of a meal. Our concept of “main course” and “side course is inverted. A big portion of greasy salty meat dish and a few bites if veg on the side is a bad idea. Not healthy and very expensive. Nobody should eat 16 ounces of steak or pot roast in one sitting that’s insanity. Load up on nice fresh veg and make meat the savory side dish.
