It all came out when I was dating my first girlfriend. My dad told me the whole story about how his mom wasn’t allowed to come to his wedding and she sent someone to represent the family in her stead, and how she regretted that decision up until the day my dad introduced her to my mom’s family and brought her into the fold (I don’t know when that happened, presumably before I was born). My dad was telling me all this so that I would feel comfortable choosing the right woman, even if he or my mom didn’t approve, because the same thing happened to him when he was a college-age student deeply in love with a woman his parents didn’t approve of. It profoundly reshaped my understanding of my parents and grandparents, and despite the fact that they are all complete fucking wingnuts, I can’t help but respect them for it.

That is tough, sorry for that story….damn….Realistic religious folks have become saner while the conservative takes on religion have gotten even more oppressive.

The closest I come to that was my parents saying that they couldn’t go to an uncle’s wedding when it happened because he was a catholic marrying a protestant…
