It makes it excruciatingly hard to watch.

The interesting thing was how the miners actually were requisitioned to do the work and how their leader tried to do right by his people.

In the end, they never had to implement the cooling system, because the reactor never melted all the way down - they filled in the tunnel built with concrete and called it a day.

But at the time, they didn’t know that.

My favorite character in this increasingly hard-to-watch series is the head of the miners. His taunt: “You don’t have enough bullets to shoot us all and the survivors will beat the living shit out of you” struck home for me; I worked in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, etc., and that guy was the epitome of the “hard as a coffin nail” blue-collar Ūdarniki I came to know.

They’re not afraid of a goddam thing. They won’t back down if you point the entire Red Army at them, because that’s their daily life.

All of them patting the mining apparatchik on his delicate robins-egg blue suit to muss it up was perfect.

We need more of this attitude in the modern Democratic party. My grampa sure as fuck had it, after the Depression spent slaving in the lumber camps for the WPA.
