This hearing is a pretty good argument for why seniority systems do not make better politicians. The younger, hungrier members of the committee are asking solid questions with strong follow-up, while the “elder statesmen” are more interested in speechifying that does little but burns up their time.

There used to be a good reason why the D’s used seniority as the only criteria. That reason no longer applies.

(used to be, black congressmen were routinely excluded from consideration. This isn’t the D’s current problem).

The R’s pick their committee chairs based on fundraising totals; I don’t like that either. But I’m not sure what sort of objective criteria will yield best results.
