Repubs have a twisted but strong survival instinct when it comes to politics. If they’re giving Matty a wide berth, that’s pretty clear evidence that they know his career’s about to implode and they don’t want to get hit by the shrapnel.

When the GOP circles the wagons, it’s because they reckon they can ride out a scandal. When they cut one of their own loose, it’s because they know the shit’s about to hit the fan - and they don’t want that shit sticking to them.
