I tend to think of Bush Sr. as the last of the pragmatic Republicans. Norquist still likes to claim his pelt as his first big “victory” and that’s why I hate the slimy bastard more than anything else. Man made a judgment call that his predecessor made numerous times, raising taxes to address the deficit, and he ended up vilified for it while Ronnie goes down in history as “one of the greats.”

There’s also the racism of the Willie Horton campaign spots and the shameless pandering of the flagburning stuff in 1988.
