A few bad Muslim schools shouldn’t blind us to the merits of faith schools

Secular fundamentalists think all their Christmases have come at once - or should that be Wintervals? The controversy over a handful of secular schools hijacked by Islamic fundamentalists in Birmingham has inevitably led to renewed criticism of religious education in general, as if faith schools are guilty of the same bad practices. Among other things, the Birmingham schools have been accused of illegally segregating male and female pupils, discriminating against their non-Muslim pupils and restricting GCSE choices to “comply with conservative Islamic teaching”.
