Yep no one knows that Robert Byrd was a KKK member. What I find most annoying with them pointing out Byrd repeateldy is they ignore that they embraced Jesse Helms who may have not been in the KKK but was much more racist in public life than Byrd was. That’s not to say I don’t have criticisms of Byrd but Helms was an ugly racist and the same GOP that shouts Byrd also embraced the Dixiecrat presidential candidate with welcome arms too.

The party that welcomed disaffected racists to bring about the post civil-rights party realignment doesn’t get to be taken seriously on race until at least:

1) The fact of the southern strategy is admitted.

2) The welcome mat for neo-confederates and racists is withdrawn, both in elected leadership and in places like the National Review.
