The real asset the US has is prime farmland. And yet the over-exploitation has caused a great deal of erosion. That the US can remain a food exporter even in the face of climate change is our ace in the hole as far as global wealth is concerned.

Another aspect of the over-exploitation that needs to be mentioned is the Ogallala Aquifer. Once it is depleted, that prime farmland is going to be much less productive. I don’t recall who said his farm’s water table is much lower now than in the past, but water is becoming a scarcening (that really should be a word; ok, it is a word. Siri is a moron, also, water is wet) resource in the plains land. It’s not a serious problem yet, but it will be in the future.
