You forget that the donor class is interested only in enhancing their own wealth, improving their bottom-line, and have no concern about the long-term survival of the planet. They definitely do not care about democracy or justice or the Constitution; they are short-term thinkers all. But if they can preserve their wealth and status, they are indifferent if the rest of society crumbles about them.

That kind of short term thinking by the ruling class has been tried before. It didn’t work out well for French aristocrats in 1789.
