Did you read further down in the Snopes article to find that this was attributed anecdotally and has not been documented? It is a pretty loathsome quote if accurate and in context , but the paragraph below the one where snopes says ’ True ’ goes on to basically say that there is no proof that he said it.

Uh, no, that’s not what it says at all. It says there’s no record of the statement — but that he expressed remorse when asked about it.

However, that same article also mentions another racist comment he made in a Newsday interview: “Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?”
