The economy is too far down for too long. Incumbents take a beating when that happens. Since there are more Democrat incumbents than Republicans, the Dems are pretty much sure to lose some ground in the House.

All the challenger will need to do is show up and not say too much that’s too stupid. He’ll be the vote for hope and change, and the incumbent will be the candidate of more of the same, no matter what he says.

How far this goes is anybody’s guess. My guess is the Dems retain control of the House and Senate, but lose a substantial part of their now commanding majority. Half? A quarter? Beats me.

There’s simply no good news the administration can point to. No achievements that command wide public support. No prospects for a turnaround resulting from more of the same.

They’re left arguing that the Republicans would make an even bigger hash of things. Maybe that’s true, but it’s not the argument you want to be making when you ask for somebody’s vote.

You are right in many ways, but there are many things that the administration can point to.

Job loss has been turned around and we are actually recovering.

We passed health care reform and millions of Americans have coverage now that didn’t before.

We passed credit card reform and tons of vile things that the credit card companies did are now not legal.

There is a long list of accomplishments.

The problem is the 24/7 distortion and hate campaign of Fox. Since the Dems never went on a similar blitz, to even just combat the endless lies, Obama has gained little political capital for his successes.
