Well given that it was at a conference of bigots, we know what it was. Of course, there’s legitimate criticisms of HUD but something tells me that Scalise wasn’t criticizing efficiency at that so let’s just say what this was about. It was a big old dog whistle to the bigoted assholes that Duke and his friends are that think HUD is nothing but “handouts” and “freeloading” even though many of them are probably on disability themselves.

Yes, but that’s just it: HUD doesn’t handle the kind of welfare the bigots likely receive, so they feel attacking it comes with a lower risk of being criticized for hypocrisy.

Focus on HUD also allows a bigot to use the sick tactics of racial fear in housing yet again, and in this way appeal to white homeowners who are not bigots but who are worried about their property values and the area in which they live.

And bringing another hot topic onto the stage, an epicenter of such housing fears by white people is the St. Louis metro area.
