People who do not understand a concept (religion, patriotism, masculinity) simply tend to fixate on the arbitrary symbols we have come to assign to these concepts: crosses, flag pins, guns, etc…
Those who can fathom the abstract vs. those who can only understand the concrete.
I can tell you, teaching physics and math to the second group is extremely challenging.
