One of the reasons for the shear amount of the incriminating messages was concerns that Trump would renege on a deal: Taylor texted: “The nightmare is they give the interview and don’t get the security assistance.” It would be fitting that one of the contributions to Trump’s troubles was his reputation for weaseling out of agreements.

That seems to be the only reason at all that Zelensky backed out, the fear that he’d give Donny (and, but extension, Putin) everything they wanted and then be left holding the bag. And he had every reason to believe that, because there’s no way in Hell that Donny would have ever kept his word. If he didn’t back out, it would only be because he’d start raising the bar that Z had to reach before he got the military aid. Or would find some way to parcel it out so he could keep asking for “favors.”
