The one thing I don’t get though is how National Socialism is somehow on the other side of the political spectrum from the Internationale.

As has been discussed here before, the whole left-right dichotomy comes from a time when the old monarchy/theocracy system was being compared to democracy (or popular rule.) Trying to force later developments like the German National Socialist party and the Communist Party in various European countries into the right-left dichotomy is due to fail at some point.

In the old sense of the term, the “true” “right” today would be the theocrats in places like KSA, or in countries where the monarchy still has power (like Thailand.)

Ultimately the attempt by the ugly-o-sphere to smear the President as being simultaneously a Nazi and communist will peter out, I think, as people will just tire of the name calling.

What President Obama believes in is apparently a slightly more European flavor of socialism than the currently practiced but we-dare-not-name-it American form of soft socialism.
