Heard an interesting report on NPR yesterday about internet trolls. People have studied Trolling and found that on sites that require email signing linked to things like Facebook, the vitrol is significantly less, obviously because people can be traced. Trolling is at its most violent when once off accounts can be used. But of most interest to me was that where pseudonymic sign offs were allowed but the site required someone to use the same name, the discourse was much more civil. They posited that people actually become fond of their by-lines on such sites and their on-line persona becomes a real part of them and its reputation becomes something of value. Reminded me of this site.
