OT and a request, hoping there’s a lizard out there with this quotation in his or her head.

There’s a famous quotation about the importance of the military, the gist of which is that ‘our peace and freedom is kept secure by fierce men who protect us while we’re asleep in our beds at night’.

I suspect there’s more to it than that, but I simply can’t remember it, or who said it. Does anyone know the original, and who said it?
