Gas could be purchased on certain days only, to handle the shortage. They’d put a sign on a car in line “Last car. No Gas after this” and the rest of the line would break away. I had a pass to buy on my off days, because I was medical personnel.

When I was in Jr High, my friend’s mom had a ‘65 Mustang with the vanity license plate “ODD EVEN”.

In California in those days, vehicles with an odd number as the last digit could be fueled on certain days, and those with an even number could fueled up on the other days. Vanity plates could fill up at any time, iirc.
