Mourning was a big deal in Victorian times. Large families, primitive medicine, lots of disease. The rules of when one went from black to purple to grey clothing were very strict, and closely observed. And, of course, you still needed jewelry to go with the clothing, so a whole industry of mourning jewelry existed.

…..all the windows closed and the curtains drawn. Black paper and ribbons draped throughout the home. Servants speaking in whispers. Social scene completely derailed for mourners. Straw in the streets outside home to muffle the horses’ hooves.

Not so much for the working class, but definitely Society.
