If you’ve got some money and you want to live in Colorado post-retirement, may I suggest the North Fork Gunnison River Valley, municipalities include Crawford, Paonia, Hotchkiss. Lovely, scenic, secluded, good climate (for Colorado, there’s vineyards in the North Fork Valley).

Yes, Texan by choice. A wildlifer’s paradise - what turns us on is often real different from what most normal people look for in life. I taught several summer courses in Boulder and fell in love with the area. While an A-frame in the mountains may have been heaven in my younger days, now? I dunno. It’s a whole new trick and I’m am old dog. Thank you for your suggestions - they may provide an ideal compromise. ;)
