Turkey’s military is fiercely secular. Under Erdogan, Turkey’s elected government has increasingly aligned itself with Islam. Insofar as the Syrian/Iraqi civil war is concerned, Turkey still thinks there is such a thing as “good Islamists” versus “bad Islamists”. Erdogan is an impediment in the fight against the ISIS.
Let’s be clear: while democratically elected secular government is best, if it ever came to a choice between secular military dictatorship which embraces modernity versus democratically elected theocracy, then far better to have secular military dictatorship. At a stretch, this applies even for the US!
Shades of the Egypt/Muslim Brotherhood fiasco. Hopefully things will turn out better for Turkey…
