Like Lee, General Thomas was a Virginian. Unlike Lee, he stayed loyal to the United States during the Civil War and paid the price, not one of his blood relatives showed up for his funeral in 1870. He was not popular, even in the North, during or immediately after the war, but present day historians think very highly of him.

He was one of the top 3 generals of the war. Only Grant and Winfield Scott (yes, old fuss & feathers - his anaconda strategy is what won the war) were more important to the Union cause.
