It’s not far wrong to say that basically all white Americans were racists in 1840.

Except a few Quakers and maybe some of the early Jews (and not even all of THEM, of course. I can’t quite say US because the earliest American Jews I’ve traced in my family tree were in New York later in the 1840s. I’m sure there were both angels and devils in that lineage.)
