I think I’ll quote Malcolm Tucker on this:
“People don’t like their politicians to be comfortable. They don’t like you having expenses. They don’t like you being paid. They’d rather you lived in a fucking cave.”
Which is precisely why only wealthy people can run for our state legislature here.
I thought about it, to run against my Republican senator, but he’s very rich and I’m not. The state only pays $12,000 a year for a senator, you’re required to live in Lincoln during the legislative session and maintain a home in your district (four hundred miles away for us). He can afford to do that, I cannot. Therefore I am locked out of running for state government.
Not paying legislators means only rich people can be legislators.
