Well, it’s still a year away from the election, so that, specifically, is not going to be a factor IMO. But “stupid enough”? - these are Congressional Republicans we’re talking about: it’s more a case (again, JIMO) of “desperate enough”.

However, I’m also thinking that a “blackmail” shutdown WILL backfire badly on Trump and the GOP: if for no other reason that it will be able to be spun as, fundamentally, an admission of guilt: and MAY just be enough to push public opinion up past the 60% “impeach and remove” level that would likely spell doom for the last of GOP resistance.

Not that the Senate would vote him out, necessarily….

Oh, don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of stupid Congressional Republicans that the veto override would be close. But I think McConnell may be cutting Trump lose, he’s already abandoned a unified defense among Senators. And more Republicans outside the deepest red states/districts may do the math when more polls come out.
