Libertarianism is a very broad philosophy, at its heart simply meaning valuing individual liberty above all else. There are many different paths to this, including socialist libertarians.

If you mean libertarians in the US, they’ve been, recently, minarchists infested with confederatists, who made a laughingstock of themselves by picking Bob Barr, a recent ‘convert’, to be their presidential nominee.
