There was a practical reason for gender roles before contraception, electric washing machines, vacuums and dishwashing machines.

It made more sense for the man to plow the fields and the woman to stay with the kids and do the household tasks.

There was a farmer in Carter Co. Ky, named Bill Carter. At least one season he pushed a plow, and his wife pulled it. We take a lot for granted.
