I had the same theory. My grandfather was too young for WWII but his brothers and brother in law were in WWII. I’m also descended from people who were persecuted by the Nazis.

And just like Confederate revisionism, we have National Socialist revisionism: starting from “not everything they did was totally evil” they wind up with “they were just decent next-door-neighbor types!”
