The one area where natgas has an advantage on wind and solar is that without battery storage to smooth production and to deal with ebb/flow of wind and day/night cycle for solar is that natgas is available anytime, and it’s relatively easy for a utility to power on a natural gas plant to generate electricity.

It’s much more difficult and costly to do that with coal, which is why utilities are shuttering coal plants everywhere. One of the biggest polluters in the NYC metro area shut down last year, and they’re already in the process of dismantling the plant because it’s never ever coming back.

The thing is that wind, and especially solar, are in their infancy tech-wise. It’s like the discussion last night about silver photography. In the late 1980s digital was just a small haze on the horizon. Twenty years later Kodak was going out of business.
