The software engineering field is in it’s very early stages. We’re a lot like the development of electricity, at the stage where they were putting wires in homes with very few standards. I’m sure houses and other things burned down due to faulty wiring at those stages.

See also, the knob-and-tube wiring in my house damaged by a storm last month.

When the electrician was here Saturday, he noted one side of the wiring was still live (the other side was pulled out of the house). We hunted for a fuse or breaker to kill the wiring … eight feet up in my kitchen closet I found the porcelain double-throw knife switch.

He said “I’m not touching that thing.” I used a broom handle to throw the switch into the “open” position.
