Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of people repeat the standard Lost Cause claim that the Civil War was really about a tariff rather than about slavery. This was taught as dogma in Texas public schools well into the 80s.
It’s occurred to me that a lot of these people don’t know what a tariff is or how it works. If you ask them for details they never know the name of the specific act, when it was passed, or which provisions were so egregious that they triggered war. Others have the stupid idea that there had never been tariffs in this country until the period right before the war.

Lincoln wasn’t even President when most of the states seceded. There’s been a movement for a long time to dismiss slavery as a reason for secession.
