He is apologizing because he embarrassed his employer and his profession, among other things.

Please keep in mind, these were ostensible private remarks in a private forum. He did not embarass anyone any more than I embarass my mother-in-law by saying things to my wife about my mother-in-law when she is out of earshot.

If my wife chooses to repeat them to her mother it is her own embarrassment, not mine.
