part of the reason why so many were shocked when Hitler cut a deal with the Soviets (and watching Stalin essentially write off the German Communists, which shows what a pragmatic cold-hearted villain he was) because it allowed Hitler pretty much a free hand in the west. Political expediency can make for some strange bedfellows… witness US policy in the middle east and south america where we propped up every two bit tyrant in order to halt the march of communism.
