If he wanted this to be understood as a private function and not as president, then I can see not taking AF1. But whether you like it or not you are president 24/7. You have to stay in contact with the military, the state, etc. I don’t like the idea of him traveling with such limited security and “out of earshot,” as it were. Blackberry or no blackberry.
Good point about the communications gear. I wonder if they can replicate that ability in the Gulfstream. Frankly, I don’t remember hearing about any other sitting President in my lifetime ever traveling by air in anything other than AF1. I could be wrong.
