re: #649 Slap

During the “No on 8” campaign in California, I was working with a few other “right-leaning gays” to get Rev. White to come to California to speak out against CA Proposition 8.

The UCC in general, and Trinity UCC, Chicago, in particular—Rev. White’s Church—perform same-sex marriages. They run great ads about inclusiveness, like this one:

and this one (my favorite)

We weren’t able to get Rev. White. While we didn’t hear from him directly, his staff indicated that he didn’t want to “distract” from Obama’s campaign. (Too bad. I guess some thought it was more important to get Obama elected than to stand up for principles; I don’t know what Rev. White personally thought.) Of course, Obama, after ditching Rev. White, picked Rev. Rick “Meth Driven Live” Warren, who was a small part of the envoy that went to Uganda to lobby for the death penalty for homosexuals.

Another interesting footnote: Many gays I met, having only seen out of context clips of Rev. White quote, were *astonished* to discover that he was opposed to marriage discrimination. They presumed, based on their own prejudice, that he was some kind of “hellfire and brimstone” preacher.
