Although I question as much as you do their ability to actually deliver on long-term viability, I think it’s very much in UAW’s interest to try to ensure Chryser and GM remain viable. I actually have a much more optimistic view than many others in this thread, hoping that, perhaps when UAW has a true interest in the viability of Chrysler for its own long-term health, it will be that much more willing to effect compromises—i.e., it’s no longer an us-versus-them, but rather, an internal question of what to do with the income Chrysler generates.

In fact, I’m somewhat surprised I don’t see union supporters concerned that the union owning the company is equivalent to not having a union at all. After all, UAW now has an intense interest in ensuring Chrysler remains profitable; why not accomplish that at the expense of the workers?
