This is a classic psychopathic response. Trump can’t properly prioritize between the benefits of tearing Cruz down vs. building the GOP as a team up. He doesn’t care how much damage he inflicted on the brand or party unity with that stunt, he thinks he managed to embarrass and harm Cruz and in his view harming a rival is emotionally indistinguishable from personal success. This was just another Prisoner Dilemma test that Trump failed by chasing harm to others as its own reward.

Trump could have also shifted the focus from PlagiarismGate to Pence’s acceptance speech, instead we now have process stories about Cruz’s speech.
