In the UK the tax situation is a bit different — the Government takes 10% of the stake for gambling like the National Lottery, horse racing and other betting shop offerings but in exchange any winnings are not taxed as income so if you win you get the entire sum. The Chancellor who brought in this scheme was himself known to enjoy gambling.
