And then that will guarantee 1994 all over again. Only this time, 2024 won’t be a repeat of 1996 — it will be the end of our republic. If the Democrats had delivered on health care in 1994, Gingrich might not have succeeded in his Contract on America. But they didn’t — and we are still suffering from that Republican victory in taking over both Houses.

It bodes ill for our future that the entire GOP Senate supported McConnell’s attack on our economy by refusing to pass the Democrat’s clean bill on the debt limit. Not a single Republican demurred. The GOP smells blood — and they will work in unison to destroy this democracy. And failure to pass the smaller bipartisan bill will just feed into their narrative.
