OK - last week on the overnight thread, we got into a discussion about ginger ales.

I managed to find some Blenheim ginger ale locally. I can’t say it was a thrilling experience. Very gingery to the point of being hot, but oddly lacking in actual taste. I wouldn’t say it was bad. But it wasn’t a standout.

Still looking for Reed’s. So far, no luck.

Frankly, I doubt anything will match up to Vernors in my book, just because it’s the ginger ale I grew up with. It has the added cachet of having originated in Detroit, so our roots are entangled. And, of course, it’s aged in oak barrels for four years - or it used to be. I doubt they make it this way anymore. They certainly don’t pump it full of CO2 like they used to - nearly double the normal carbonization of other soft drinks, modern cans wouldn’t hold up to the pressure.

Like others, I don’t see how Canada Dry can call itself ginger ale; there’s nothing remotely gingery about it that I can detect. It isn’t bad; I just can’t count it as ginger ale. And then there’s the whole question of why Canada Dry’s Tonic Waer does this under a black light, which is vaguely disturbing.
