Doing some Google work: Bachmann’s from Minnesota, Palin’s an Alaskan. Christine O’Donnell is in Delaware, born in Pennsylvania. Orly Taitz is Russian, or something. Sharron Angle was born in Oregon, runs in Nevada. Walker is in Wisconsin. The Koch brothers are from Kansas and live in New York. Trump’s a New Yorker. Ron Paul did make his way to Texas, but he’s from Pittsburgh, and his son was born there too. Scott Brown’s from Maine. Pam Geller’s a New Yorker. Gingrich is from Pennsylvania. Andy Martin, called ‘king of the Birthers’ is from Connecticut.

Sure, there are Southerners, (Vitter and Huckabee, for example) and some of the people above have run in Southern states. But I’m not getting the idea that this craziness is issuing from the deep heart of Dixie, and the rest of us are just along for the ride.

Of course it’s not that simple, and you can find all sorts of anecdotal data that shows racism all over. But poll after poll shows that the most racist attitudes still reside in the South, and that the center of gravity in the modern gop (as well as the evangelical movement) is the South, a process which began with the sinister and blatantly racist “southern strategy” of Goldwater and Nixon.
