Well, there’s that, but it’s not JUST that, and frankly, you can’t really build a party from the top, unless you build it around one person running for President, a la Perot. And that guy was bugfuck insane.

If you want to build a party you have to start at the bottom, but the majoritarian, district-based nature of how we choose our representatives makes it hard to break in, even at that level. Every race already has someone from the two majors running, or one person running unopposed - and if that race were contestable, the other party would get there first.

I think it’s not so much the money, it’s the set up.

The Tea Party and, to some extent the Libertarians, have been fairly successful in taking over the GOP because they understood the system and building their revolution from the ground up. That is, going for the local and state races first, then Congress.
The closest thing resembling the former GOP is blue dog dems. And they are getting pretty weird now as well.
