There are more than 1200 colonias in Texas. FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND people live in them. It is a hidden world that most Americans would not believe exists in their own country.

I remember being shocked when I learned of their existence a few years ago (can’t find the original article because PBS’s site says it no longer has rights to distribute the content, but there’s this).

It’s third-world conditions right there in America.
