According to Dick Dale’s Wikipedia, he says he had to keep touring to the end of his life because his healthcare costs were bankrupting him and he had to keep earning money the only way he knew how. When he died in March 2019 he had tour dates scheduled into November of that year.

Reminds me of what happened to Vic Chesnutt. Before the ACA he was “uninsurable” because he was quadriplegic, which left him in deep debt for much of his life. He attempted suicide many times. He died on Christmas Day 2009 after overdosing on muscle relaxers.
