Of course it’s not that simple, and you can find all sorts of anecdotal data that shows racism all over. But poll after poll shows that the most racist attitudes still reside in the South, and that the center of gravity in the modern gop (as well as the evangelical movement) is the South, a process which began with the sinister and blatantly racist “southern strategy” of Goldwater and Nixon.

That’s true, to some degree (you can find a lot more than ‘anecdotal’ evidence of racism all over). But that was all true before Obama came into office.

And out West, I can see how people buy into the Tea Party here for all kinds of reasons, our local racial problems being one of them.

It’s a bit more complicated than this incessant banging on ‘the South still has deep-rooted racism, therefore…something’.

I hear what you’re saying. I do know this stuff. But I also remember that Bill Clinton was accused of MURDER by these people, and, pace Maya Angelou, he actually was white.
