Heh, funny you say that. some time ago I was getting a hard time from a very self important young security guard and I got my back up a bit. “you could be some Muslim terrorist” he says. So I said “thanks for the update, now I understand you to be a really crappy guard AND a bigot too.” It got a little more tense until a sheriff showed up and we had a nice talk. After all I was on a very public sidewalk. Taking snaps of a nice building.
I haven’t gone out to NYC to take photos since… gosh, prolly since pre-9/11. The hijab, y’know? IMO, it’s highly unlikely an actual terrorist would wear hijab to take photos of a target, but people can be paranoid (as your experience demonstrates). I’ve done it around Jersey without ever being bothered, but I don’t usually photograph buildings. I’ve never gone anywhere except around my neighborhood with the DSLR.
