Good question, but if you look at the graph (downstairs), housing emissions are up too.

More houses, bigger houses, more energy use.

More houses built in exurban areas means long commutes to town.

Population growth in the US has also meant increased emissions. Per capita emissions since 1990 are down because so many more people while electricity generation has reduced their total emissions.

It’s not looking good on the climate change front.

Should we give up?

No, since Miocene-level CO2 would be much worse than Pliocene-level CO2.

I’m pretty sure that most people will buy big houses and terrible vehicles as long as they have the money to do so. This may not be fixable because if people find themselves with less purchasing power, they’ll vote for Republicans.
