There’s a large economic component to this story. A Woman’s family is expected to pay a dowry as well as paying for the wedding (which can cost two years wages). Some of this isn’t gender discrimination per se, but rather a rational decision that the family cannot provide for another girl.

Yes, I understood that much, but it just seems…really bad for the women in terms of their health, having multiple abortions like that. After all, an abortion is a surgical procedure and therefore carries risks. The woman could end up with an infection, hemorrhaging, etc. What if, when they decide they want another child, she can’t carry it to term?

Better to just prevent pregnancy, as theheat mentioned. I realize that that may not be an option, culturally speaking, but still.
